Case studies

Bath NHS

When the Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust released 75,000 medical x-ray records from storage, it benefitted financially by almost £22,000.

The hospital’s x-ray archive of hard film scans dated back some years; costing the Trust a considerable amount of money to continue storing. In 2012, several roomfuls of silver-containing x-rays reached their expiry date and were scheduled for destruction. These x-rays were all recycled; the silver was extracted, the paper and card was recycled and the leftover plastic was cleaned ready for remanufacture. All together, Betts Envirometal were able to provide the Trust with a rebate of £4,499 from the extracted silver, and the Trust saved £17,500 in storage costs by disposing of these files responsibly.

Case studies

Multi-national casting company

This multi-national casting company  manufacturer has a number of sites throughout Europe, which undertake X-ray operations on items created with a casting process. Managing different individual processes, they produce a huge quantity of potentially valuable X-ray waste.

Each site was responsible for managing its own waste including the management of the silver extraction from these X-rays. Typically, each site was only being rebated enough money to cover their operational costs. The total value of silver recovered in 2009, across all the sites, was £15,000.

Betts Envirometal approached the client with a robust scalable solution, providing uniformity across all their sites. This new model offered a stronger financial rebate for silver recovery, and combined with new equipment installed by Betts Envirometal, the company was better able to realise the value of its X-ray and photographic fixer. In just 12 months Betts Envirometal delivered financial rebates back to the customer totalling £95,000, a significant 500 per cent increase.

Professional Services sector waste management

With paper representing the biggest section of office waste, managers may be surprised by the myriad everyday items which can also be recycled. This can include printed circuit boards from computers and other office equipment; in many such cases, silver and other precious metals can be extracted and a financial rebate given back to the company. With benefits like this to offset the cost, saving the planet needn’t burn a hole in your pocket.
